Christmas Plants And Floweres
There are certain plants that are symbolic of the Christmas season. These plants and their flowers evoke in us the beauty, and hope that the Season conveys.
One of the main characteristic of typical Christmas flowers is their abundance of green leaves. Green symbolizes life, and hope. In parts of the world where Christmas is a winter festival, the absence of outdoor greenery is very evident. During this time of year, the leaves of most plants, and trees have browned, and fallen off so, Christmas plants with their abundance of green leaves are symbolic of life and triumph.
Historically, the color green has always had great significance. During the Roman winter festival of Saturnalia, Romans decorated with, and gave gifts of green plants for good luck. Green is also considered lucky in the Islamic tradition where green gifts may be given on any morning to wish someone a lucky day. Green has also been associated with life, justice, freedom, kindness, sympathy, charity, abundance, tranquility, and peace.
Christmas is a celebration of life, and of humanity; hence, the color green is very appropriate as the central theme color of this celebration. The typical Christmas plants and flowers are: Evergreen, Pointsettias, Holly, Ivy and Mistletoe. Each of these plants has a particular significance, and a role to play in the Christmas festival.
